Stuck trying to come up with a writing prompt for students that they’ll get excited about? Do students often complain about not being able to come up with a topic on their own to write about? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you need to check out the app Write About This.
This app allows students to look at photos and write about them. On the Home page, students can choose to search for a specific topic, pick from a category, choose random and allow the app to pick for them, create their own prompt by taking a picture, or do a quick write. Once they pick a prompt, students are shown a picture and given a prompt usually in the form of a question.
The app has the added feature of speaking the prompt for students who may need the assistance. They then click on the “Write” icon and are taken to a new page where the screen is split: the picture is on the left and a notebook is on the right. The students then write on that notebook page.
They can also record audio onto the page. Once they finish writing they can save it to the gallery or “My Write Abouts.”
The company also has a web version called Write About and can be found at www.writeabout.com. As it says on the main page of the website, it is “a community where students engage in high-interest writing for an authentic audience and teachers help students grow through the entire writing process.” The website provides a safe and simple space for students to write.
In addition, they now also have a new app called Tell About This – a tool that allows younger children to record their voice and tell a story.
Write About This is currently available in the Apple App Store but according to the company an Android version will be released soon. There is a free and paid version.
